People's understanding of foldable smartphones will go through three stages:
The first stage: a good foldable phone is one that can achieve the functions and performance of an ordinary smartphone
The second stage: an excellent foldable phone is one that reaches the weight and thickness of an ordinary smartphone
The third stage: thinness and lightness have begun to affect the normal functions of foldable phones, and people are no longer deliberately pursuing thinness and lightness, but are more concerned about the experience.
You are in the second stage.
And some Chinese consumers, including me, are already in the third stage.
The endless pursuit of thinness is a wrong direction. It will lose some of the original performance, such as speakers. Many foldable phones have weakened speakers because of thinness, which weakens the most basic sound quality. It's ridiculous. In order to pursue thinness, this is the price that must be paid.
Don't fall into the trap of thinking that thinness is good.

Does the thinness of foldable phones really affect the average user's experience? I would say no. Sure, some people might complain about the low quality speakers, but for any normal person looking to consider buying a foldable phone, ones that are especially not clamshell type foldables, portability and durability would be their main concern.
With advancements in tech, I can see that most foldable companies have worked out their kinks and are making more foldables with durability and portability in mind.
I would have to say that "thinness" here would be progress, so that companies and provide better user experiences to more diverse form factors of foldable (or perhaps rollable phones) in the near future, without losing too much on user experiences on ABCs (Audio, Battery life and Cameras).

No. Many of us is in entirely another stage: beginning to think that foldables aren't exactly the future we were looking forward to, and never be.
They will exist as a distinct category of products, but will never be mainstream and reach the experience of candy bar type foldables.
It is amusing to think that one country's consumer is in next stage than other counties'. Obnoxious, I'd say.
Thinness and lightness are crucial for a tri-fold phone to achieve acceptable portability, making slimness extremely important from an experience perspective.
Personally, I rarely use smartphone or laptop speakers for anything other than ringtones, so I don't care about speaker quality.
